Abstract: The Hope Fault is a 150 miles long strike slip fault in Westland and North Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand. It is the south-easternmost of the four major strike slip faults constituting the Marlborough fault system. Evidence is presented for dextral strike slip movements of several feet in the last century, tens of hundreds of feet in the late Quaternary, and 12 miles total movement. The fault trace is unusually curved, and it branches at both ends into numerous faults through which the lateral movement is dispersed and dissipated. The strike slip movement along the curved shape of the fault causes local deformations such as grabens, folds, and faults. The mode of dissipation of the strike slip movement at the ends of the fault indicates that this fault, and perhaps also all other Marlborough faults, rotated anticlockwise throughout the dextral strike slip movement, and that they are features confined within the Marlborough block. It is suggested that the strain of the strike slip movements is pure shear deformation of the Marlborough block, with maximum shortening at an angle of 55O to the general strike of the strike slip faults.
