Stout, M.L. 1971 Landslide studies - Kawarau Gorge, South Island, New Zealand. Lower Hutt: New Zealand Geological Survey. New Zealand Geological Survey report EG 117 20 p.
Abstract: This report presents the results and recommendations of a geologic field review and laboratory study of materials involved in massive landslides along the Kawarau Gorge in Central Otago. The study was undertaken at the request of the Power Design Office, Ministry of Works, Wellington. The purpose of the investigation was to review existing geologic and seismic data, and to sample representative surface materials in the landslides for testing by Central Laboratories in order to determine what effect reservoir filling would have on landslide stability. Although emphasis was placed on the massive landslide on the western site of Mt Difficulty, field observations and samples from reconnaissance studies elsewhere in the gorge are also recorded in this report. Recommendations regarding future investigations are also included. (auth)
