Riddolls, B.W. 1975 Geology at three viaducts, Palmerston North-Gisborne railway, near Ormondville, S. Hawkes Bay. Lower Hutt: New Zealand Geological Survey. New Zealand Geological Survey report EG 226 6 p.

Abstract: This project results from a request (Ref 19/630) from the special projects office of the Ministry of Works and Development, which has been engaged by N.Z. Railways to assess the present condition of three viaducts near Ormondale on the Palmerston North-Gisborne railway (Fig. 1). This assessments will provide a basis for deciding whether the present structures should be upgraded or replaced, particularly in view of the future need to carry heavier traffic. The three viaducts are situated at Makotuku (Bridge 155, Makotuku Stream), Ormondville (Bridge 156, Whangarangiora Stream), and near Kopua (Bridge 158 near Manawatu River). The approaches to both the Makotuku and Kopua viaducts have in the past been affected by instability of the natural ground. The area was visited on 22 and 23 April, 1975, with Dr I.M. Parton and Mr S Monaghan, M.W.D. (auth)
