Hancox, G.T.; Grammer, T.R. 1975 Bridge 179 NIMT, Makatote viaduct: comments on general foundation geology and consultants report of 14 January 1975. Lower Hutt: New Zealand Geological Survey. New Zealand Geological Survey report EG 231 7 p.
Abstract: The Chief Engineer, N.Z. Railways, requested a comment on the geology of the Makatote viaduct site, and on geological aspects of your consultants (Murray North Partners, Hamilton) design report of 14 January 1975 (1). Three visits were made to the site by G.T. Hancox, N.Z. Geological Survey, and T.R. Grammer, Ministry of Works and Development, to investigate the geology of the site with most emphasis being given to the foundations of the south bank. Considerable effort was made to locate the earlier investigation drives but most of these appear to have been filled in, or have collapsed, and their locations obscured by thick scrub. The two drives near pier 8 (referred to in the design report) were located and inspected. However, because of the thick vegetation cover ont he gorge walls and limited exposure of the pier foundations a detailed investigation was not feasible. (auth)
