Perrin, N.D. 1982 Geological evaluation of proposed Hawkes Bay Maui natural gas pipeline route, stage II: Takapau to Hastings. Lower Hutt: New Zealand Geological Survey. New Zealand Geological Survey report EG 372 8 p.

Abstract: Of the two alternative routes for the proposed Hawkes bay Maui natural gas pipeline between Takapau and Hastings, the western one is preferred on geological grounds, as slope instability problems, swampy ground and active fault traces are prevalent along the eastern alternative. Special precautions will have to be taken through an area of sinkholes at Te Onepu. The only other engineering geological problems foreseen are possible difficulties with minor instability in very weak materials on some slopes, and poorly-drained pumice soils could present problems for trench excavation in some areas, particularly near Bridge Pa.
