Macfarlane, D.F. 1988 Lower Waitaki power investigations : summary and assessment of engineering geological investigations up to December 1987. Lower Hutt: New Zealand Geological Survey. New Zealand Geological Survey report EG 406 2 v.
Abstract: This report documents and assesses the results of engineering geological studies carried out as part of the investigation into the feasibility of hydro-electric power development on the Lower Waitaki River. Regional geology, subsurface information and geotechnical test data are used to develop an understanding of conditions at proposed structure sites, and of processes that may affect them. In addition to cut slope stability and foundation geology, assessments are made of groundwater conditions, construction material resources and (on a preliminary basis) seismotectonic hazard. It is concluded that although geological and geotechnical factors requiring specific design considerations affect all proposed forms of development, all existing options are technically feasible.
