Mortimer N, Smith Lyttle B, Black J. 2020. Tectonic map of Te Riu-a-Māui / Zealandia. Lower Hutt (NZ): GNS Science. 1 poster, scale 1:8,500,000. (GNS Science poster; 8).
This map poster shows the main tectonic features of the region within and near Te Riu-a-Māui / Zealandia. Earth's eighth continent is c. 5 Mkm2 in area and 95% submerged. Like all continents, it has a foundation of old, hard, crystalline rocks and a cargo of younger sedimentary basins and volcanoes. Te Riu-a-Māui / Zealandia is surrounded by oceanic crust of various ages and cut by the active Pacific-Australia plate boundary.
Crust type (continental, oceanic, volcanic arc, large igneous province; poorly constrained) and simplified Te Riu-a-Māui / Zealandia basement geology (Eastern and Western provinces, Median Batholith, Cenozoic allochthon, sedimentary basins) are shown as coloured areas on the map poster. Spreading ridges, fracture zones, subduction thrusts, intra-oceanic rifts, ocean floor isochrons, contours on subducting slab depth and the subsurface extent of the Hikurangi Plateau are shown as lines. Active plate boundary features and motion vectors are highlighted. Volcano locations are shown by symbols classified according to their age and nature (subduction-related, within-plate hotspot track and within-plate other).
The map poster is drawn using the New Zealand Continental Shelf 2000 Lambert Conformal Projection. Data sources and acknowledgements are given in GNS Science Report 2020/01. For an accompanying bathymetric map see GNS Science Poster 7
