Abstract: In recent months we have all been reminded of the forces of nature, whether it be in form of earthquakes, flooding or high winds, predictions of climate change or the potential impacts of failure of the crater wall of Ruapehu. The 1998 Natural Hazards Workshop in Christchurch has been organised jointly by the Canterbury Regional Council and the Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences. The workshop's aim is to: highlight some of the difficulties of compiling, assessing, interpreting and applying hazard information; explore successful approaches used to apply hazard information to solve practical planning, development and construction problems, as well as emergency preparedness.
