Lower Hutt: Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences Limited. Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences information series 60 1 v.
Abstract: Spectacular outcrops of Middle and Late Miocene sediments occur along the north Taranaki coast. The overall succession exposed comprises a range of siliciclastic and volcaniclastic sediments deposited in shelf, slope, and basin floor marine environments on the northeastern margin of the Taranaki Basin. During our field trip we will examine aspects of the Mount Messenger Formation and overlying Urenui Formation. Numerous localities will be examined that will give an overview of Miocene deep-water deposition in the basin. This field guide briefly describes the strata exposed and their context in terms of Taranaki Basin evolution. (auth)
