McPherson, R.I. 1989 Historical records of alluvial gold mining in the Westport area, South Island, New Zealand. Lower Hutt: New Zealand Geological Survey. New Zealand Geological Survey report M 177. 50 p.
Abstract: This report describes types of mining claims and methods of alluvial gold mining in the Westport area at the turn of the century; summarises records of mining operations from 1870 to 1965, and known gold production from 1870 to 1940. It lists close on 350 gold mining leases issued between 1868 and 1900, giving (where possible) the names of applicants and surveyors, and the acreages of claims applied for. It also comments briefly on the numbers and nationalities of those employed in alluvial mining during the interval up to c.1900.The contents of this report were compiled originally as seven appendices to a manuscript on Quaternary ilmenite and gold-bearing coastal deposits of Westport. The manuscript was eventualy published, without the appendices on the gold mining history, as New Zealand Geological Survey bulletin 87 (McPherson 1978). The original appendices have been edited and are published here becasue of renewed interest in goldmining in the area and they were not otherwise available.
