Hay, R.F. 1983 Geological map of New Zealand 1:63,360 Sheet N3 & N4 Parenga. Wellington: Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Geological map of New Zealand 1:63,360 N3 & N4 1 fold. map + 1 booklet

Abstract: The Parenga sheet area is part of the Aupouri Penisula of Northland. Physiography is dominated by sand dunes on both coasts, with hilly country inland formed by volcanic and sedimentary rocks of Cretaceous to Tertiary age. Cretaceous sedimentary rocks (Tokerau, Tupou, and Awapoko formations) are restricted in extent and comprise indurated sandstone and mudstone. Tertiary sedimentary rocks (Paua and Paratoetoe Formations) are widespread in the north and east of the mapped area and comprise siliceous claystone, alternating sandstone and mudstone, and local conglomerate. The Paua Formation is considered to be allochthonous. Two volcanic formations of probable Cretaceous age are mapped - Mount Camel Volcanic and Te Kao Volcanic formations, the latter consisting of basalt and spilite, and cropping out in a central massif and on several coastal promontories. Quaternary dune sands are subdivided into eight dune complexes based on age and distribution. The Kokota Sand has a particularly high silica content and is mined for use in glass making
