Jolly, A.D. (ed) 2013 Te Maari day : a workshop to discuss scientific advances from the 2012 Te Maari eruptions held at Taupo District Council Offices, Turangi, 22 March 2013 : abstract volume. Lower Hutt, NZ: GNS Science. GNS Science miscellaneous series 66 28 p.

Abstract: The 6 August 2012 eruption from the northern flank of the Tongariro massif comprised a small but complex event, producing discrete directed eruption jets, a debris avalanche, and the formation of an arcuate chasm around the south-eastern margin of the upper Te Maari vent. This abstract volume was drawn from a science meeting on 22 March 2013 at the Taupo District Council offices in Turangi, and has been dubbed ‘Te Maari Day’ to describe the presentation of a range of papers about the eruption in particular together with several on more generally related New Zealand volcano research. The Te Maari Day meeting served two important purposes: first to improve engagement between end-users of volcano science information and the volcanology research community, and second to improve the interaction amongst scientists to further their understanding of the eruption. Towards the first goal, the meeting was held on the day following the semi-annual meeting of the Central Plateau Volcanic Advisory Group (CPVAG), and this ensured a strong attendance from the end-user community. For the second part, the Te Maari Day meeting served the important purpose of integrating the volcano science community ahead of the submission deadline for the planned Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research (JVGR) ‘Tongariro Special Issue’. The concept of a Special Issue was conceived shortly after the eruption in Spring 2012 and the Journal submission deadline was set for July 2013. Hence, the timing of the Te Maari Day meeting was well suited to deliver early results to end-users, and also to link ideas and debate models ahead of the submission deadline. (auth)
