Abstract: Two stratigraphic drillholes at Charteris Bay have shown the Charteris Bay Sandstone is underlaid by carbonaceous sandstone and flows of rhyolite and andesite interbedded with conglomerate derived from both volcanic rocks and Torlesse Supergroup. Through the flow units have not been dated successfully they probably correlate with the Mount Somers Volcanics of the central Canterbury foothills and are therefore probably Cretaceous
