Wellman, H.W. 1973 List of conglomerates in the Tertiary and lower Quaternary sediments of west Nelson and the West Coast, South Island. Lower Hutt: New Zealand Geological Survey. Report NZGS 65 10 p.
Abstract: The composition of conglomerates within a sedimentary sequence is important in testing any paleogeographic reconstruction. This list of comglomerates of known age within the Tertairy and lower Quaternary sediments of the north-western part of the South Island was prepared by Dr H.W. Wellman in 1950. There have been no substantial changes in the knowledge of these comglomerate-bearing beds since then, and the list is presented largely without modification. In most cases the ages of the conglomerates were determined by the late Dr H.J. Finlay and Dr N.de B. Hornibrook from the microfossils in the surrounding sediments. The Tertairy stages of Finaly and Marwick (1947) are used throughout. The directions of origin given are based on reconnaissance surveys of the region, and can only be regarded as provisional. It is realised that much more petrological work is needed before the pebbles within the conglomerates can be accurately matched with the pre-Tertiary rocks.
