Sherwood, A.M. 1986 An outline of the geology of New Zealand coalfields. Lower Hutt: New Zealand Geological Survey. Record / New Zealand Geological Survey 15 27 p.
Abstract: New Zealand coals of economic significance range in age from Late Cretaceous to Miocene. Coal measures accumulated in a diversity of depositional and tectonic environments, result in great variation in patterns of coal measure sedimentation with corresponding variability of coal properties. Virtually the full range of coal rank is represented. The geology of the main New Zealand coalfields is summarised.
