Brown, L.J.; Elmsly, T.A. 1987 Poverty Bay flats' groundwater chemistry. Lower Hutt: New Zealand Geological Survey. Record / New Zealand Geological Survey 5. 40 p.

Abstract: The subsurface deposits and the aquifers underlying the Poverty Bay flats, are of recent geological origin having been deposited in the late Quaternary period during the last 1,000,000 years. There are at least six aquifers that are tapped by wells to provide water for domestic, stock and irrigation use. Each aquifer contains groundwater with different chemical characteristics. Groundwater chemistry imposes restraints on the use of groundwater and is a major factor when water management options of the Poverty Bay flat groundwater resource is considered.
