Abstract: Twenty-two electrical resistivity soundings have been made over the artesian part of the Heretaunga Plains underground water system. The deepest layer detected appears to represent the main aquifer having resistivity values of 200 to 500 ohm m. A shallow layer with resistivity values between 8 and 100 ohm m appears to represent the confining bed. The interpreted depths to the top of the main aquifer vary from 4 to 48 m but are probably not very reliable. Direct measurements of water samples show that the resistivity of ground water in the area is about 80 ohm m. Some of the soundings were made in the vicinity of an uncontrolled leak from the artesian system, but the results have not proved to be useful in determining the causes of the leak. (auth.)
