Abstract: This volume contains extended abstracts of papers presented at a seminar ''Recent advances in New Zealand earth science'' to mark the retirement of Ian Speden from the Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences on 30 June 1994. The title was deliberately chosen, because Ian has done so much, both as a leading geologist and science administrator, to advance Earth Science within New Zealand over almost four decades.
