Abstract: The pattern of earthquakes in New Zealand during 1992 was a little unusual, in that the latter half of the year was very quiet. There were 12 events of ML 5.0 and greater, at depths of 40 km or less, but only three of these were in the July-December period, the largest only 5.3. In contrast, the nine shallow shocks in the first half of the year included one of ML 6.1 and five others of ML 5.5 or greater. The deeper shocks were more spread throughout the year: five in the first half and eight in the second half. (W.D. Smith)f. (W.D. Smith)
