Abstract: This report presents interim results on improving the New Zealand Geological Time Scale, by the Time Scale Project. It includes final versions, with explanatory text, of the New Zealand Paleogene and Neogene time scale charts initially provided in draft form at the November, 1996, Geological Society of New Zealand Conference (Dunedin). Geochronological dating is via the geomagnetic polarity time scale (GPTS) of Cande and Kent (1995) which is calibrated by isotope data. Bioevents have been variously related to polarity chrons in the GPTS (Berggren et al., 1995a, 1995b), and serve as their proxies, under the assumption that event dispersal times are negligible. To ensure equivalence with the local biostratigraphic units, bioevents that define stage boundaries have been cited. (auth/EB)
