Abstract: This report outlines the aims, method and results of quantitative analysis of drill core sequences through the Cenozoic part of the Taranaki Basin, and constitutes the main part of the NSOF Taranaki Quantitative Stratigraphy project. The aims of the project are: establish the optimum scaled sequence of events for the Basin on probabilistic and deterministic methods; estimate quantitatively the degree to which events vary in stratigraphic order (homotaxy) and position; find the most useful and reliable events for correlation (ie potential ''key fossils''), particularly those that are not currently regarded as of correlation value; identify events that are unreliable for correlation, particularly those that are currently regarded as of value; compare and evaluate the different quantitative techniques.
