Chinn, T.J. 1998 Glacier snowline survey 1998. Lower Hutt: Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences. Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences science report 98/12 16 p.
Abstract: The 1997-98 end-of-summer snowline survey of some 49 ''index'' glaciers of the Southern Alps was undertaken in March 1998. The 1997-98 glacial year was dominated by an El Nino atmospheric circulation pattern which normally would be characterised by heavy snowfalls and low snowlines. An aberration within the El Nino system generated a persistent warm north westerly airstream throughout February, which induced exceptionally high melt rates over the glaciers. The responses of the glaciers were variable, ranging from near 'average' snowlines to very high snowlines. (auth)
