Uma, S.R. 2009 Rapid assessment of buildings with initial evaluation procedure for earthquakes. Lower Hutt, N.Z.: GNS Science. GNS Science report 2009/26 45 p.

Abstract: Vulnerability assessment of buildings is an integrated component of loss assessment methodology. The assessment of potential damage to the building inventory requires knowledge of buildings with regard to their construction vintage, material, structural system and their vulnerability to earthquake hazard. Riskscape is a loss assessment tool under development within the Natural Hazards Group of GNS Science. One of the objectives of Riskscape is to assess the damage potential of buildings exposed to a specified hazard level. As a part of Riskscape project, the author undertook a brief exercise of evaluating an ensemble of buildings in Wellington city through a ‘rapid-assessment methodology’ to gain exposure and appreciate the extent of vulnerability of buildings. The report discusses the underlying principles in identifying the vulnerable features and common types of critical structural weakness factors existing within the sample buildings included in the survey. The work was carried out in conjunction with Beca Carter Hollings and Ferner Limited as a part of their ongoing contract with Wellington City Council to identify and strengthen existing earthquake prone buildings.
