Abstract: Transverse earthquake waves, which have been observed travelling down the narrow Parkway valley in New Zealand, are approximated as travelling normal modes of vibration of the valley. Assuming a valley incised in infinitely rigid rock and filled with readily shearable but incompressible soil, the approximation is shown to hold for the waves observed at the Parkway array. Comparing the approximate solution to particle orbits observed in an earthquake suggests that the Parkway valley is functionally narrower than its surface expression. (auth)
