Abstract: Gas hydrates are increasingly being viewed as a potential future source of natural gas. Economic production of gas from hydrates is a realistic possibility within the next decade. New Zealand is endowed with a world-class gas hydrates province, the Hikurangi Margin east of the North Island. This, in combination with the depletion of conventional gas fields, may motivate government-funded gas hydrate exploration. This report synthesizes the global state of knowledge on gas hydrate exploration, presents an overview of the Hikurangi Margin gas hydrates province and summarizes GNS Science’s and the University of Otago’s plans for gas hydrate research.
