Palmer, N.G. 2010 Kinematics of the New Zealand plate boundary : field report on GPS surveys of the Fiordland/Southland network in 2009 and 2010 (FIOR2009 & FIOR2010). Lower Hutt, N.Z.: GNS Science. Lower Hutt, N.Z.: GNS Science. GNS Science report 2010/22 33 p.
Abstract: On 15 July 2009 a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred in the vicinity of Dusky Sound, Fiordland, approximately 20 km deep, 100 km north west of Tuatapere and 100 km south west of Te Anau. In response to this, a localised GPS survey (FIOR2009) was carried out in the period from 19 to 25 August 2009, with the intention of measuring the resultant co-seismic deformation. A subsequent survey (FIOR2010), involving a subset of the points measured during FIOR2009, was carried out in the period from 17 to 20 February 2010 with the intention of obtaining an initial indication of the post-seismic deformation occurring. This report documents the field operations of the “FIOR2009” earthquake response survey and the subsequent “FIOR2010” post-seismic deformation survey. It describes the logistics of the campaign, the sites occupied and the data collected. The observations are part of a Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST) supported project “Impacts of Plate Tectonics in and around New Zealand” at GNS Science. Support for both of the surveys reported here has been provided by FRST and Land Information New Zealand (LINZ). It is intended that these observations will be used in continuing studies into earth deformation within New Zealand. (auth)
