Abstract: A scanning DOAS system has been in use to detect SO2 emissions at White Island since 2006, with the hardware proving to be reliable. However, problems were found with the supplied data processing software, including very laborious processing, lack of flexibility and no support for the software or facility for us to carry out in-house development. To overcome these difficulties, we developed a new processing system using the DOASIS software package customised with Jscript code. The DOASIS application provides a set of powerful tools for DOAS fitting, while Jscript modules were used to build an automated processing system tailored to our needs. The new application allows processing to be almost fully automated, is much faster, and calculates emission rates for a wider range of wind directions by using plume modelling. This application has been developed in-house, meaning we have the source code and can fix any problems, as well as developing the application in the future. (auth)
