Abstract: In January 2010, a buoy was constructed for measuring meteorological data on Ruapehu Crater Lake. A ‘spar buoy’ design was used to minimise the effects of wind and wave action. A Vaisala weather station was attached to the top of the buoy, and internal electronics were constructed to collect the meteorological data, buoy orientation and temperature information, which were transmitted to the shore via a pair of Freewave serial radios. Data were ultimately recorded at the existing crater lake logger station, where a Compact Flash card storage module was added. The buoy was successfully deployed between 5th March and 10th April 2010, during which time a large volume of meteorological data was collected. (auth)
