Abstract: The Waimea Plains is a small (75 km2) but highly productive area in the east of the Moutere Depression adjacent to Richmond and Nelson City. The plains are the result of Late Quaternary infilling of a valley carved by the Waimea River in Moutere Gravel of Lower Pleistocene age. The Waimea River has two major tributaries, the Wairoa River which emerges from a gorge in the east and the Wai-iti which also rises in the eastern ranges by flows from the south-west in a valley cut in Moutere Gravel.
