Abstract: The Waihi district is situated in the south-eastern part of the Hauraki Goldfield. It occupies the upper part of the valley of the Ohinemuri River, together with a narrow strip to the east, barely a mile in average width, which falls steeply to the Bay of Plenty. For the purposes of this bulletin it is defined as a belt of country four or five miles wide, extending from Owharoa, five miles west of Waihi, to Waihi Beach, five miles east. In this tract gold-bearing lodes have been found and worked at Owharoa, Waihi, and Waihi Beach. The Waihi lodes far surpass those of the other localities in size and productiveness. They are found in two apparently isolated areas, the Martha Mine and the Rosemont-Silverton group of hills. The production of gold and silver from the Martha Mine and the adjoining ground had exceeded that of the Rosemont hills over a hundredfold, and for many years past mining has been almost entirely confined to the former area.
