Gage, M. 1948 The geology of the Reefton quartz lodes. Wellington: Government Printer. New Zealand Geological Survey bulletin 42 68 p.
Abstract: The area considered in this bulletin lies within the western foothills of the Victoria Range and its extension south of the upper valley of the Inangahua River. It is contained in Reefton, Waitahu and Mawheraiti survey districts, near the south-west corner of the Nelson Land District. In the National series of one-mile-to-an-inch topographic maps, it includes parts of Sheets S38, S39 and S45. In the Reefton district at the end of 1935, experiments in the application of geological and geophysical guidance to prospecting for auriferous quartz lodes were begun by the Geological and Geophysical branches of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, assisted by trenching and tunnelling parties organised by the Employment Division of the Department of Labour. The geological work was attempted to unravel the structure of the country-rock of the lodes, and to select the most favourable areas for geophysical experiments. The purpose of this publication is to record the structural data that were gathered, and the relation that appears to exist between structure and ore-body emplacement, and to present as nearly as possible an up-to-date account of the quartz-mines.
