Abstract: To determine the rates and nature of horizontal and vertical deformation at the southern end of the Ostler fault zone a monitoring scheme was established in an area known as ''the knot''. The results of vertical monitoring show no significant deformation over the past 20 years while the horizontal monitoring shows no significant deformation for the past c. 110 years. These results contrast with similar studies carried out on the central section of the fault zone near Twizel, where both vertical and horizontal movements have been recorded.
