Abstract: Research of old Survey records by R.I. Walcott (Geophysics Division, DSIR) has shown apparently large changes in angles of repeated triangulation in the Arthurs Pass region. In an attempt to confirm these changes it was decided to reobserve as much as possible of the Arthurs Pass - Otira railway tunnel construction triangulation of 1910. A gravity survey made by D. Woodward (Geophysics Division) has also found differences in gravity readings in the Arthurs Pass region, mainly between Arthurs Pass and Otira. It was considered possible that vertical crustal movements may have caused these differences and could have amounted to between a and 3 m since the construction of the Arthurs Pass - Otira Railway tunnel. To verify this change an attempt was made to determine the difference in heights between Arthurs Pass and Otira. The two sets of field work were combined between February 11 and 17., 1978. Computations and analysis were completed for this report by April 1978. The report describes the observations and results under the headings vertical and horizontal (auth)
