Abstract: The Ministry of Works plans to widen an uphill section of State Highway 2, on the Wellington side of the Rimutaka Hill (fig.1). This will involve a 10 ft excavation into the hillside (Grid ref. N161/733444). Because the existing cutting had previously failed at one place, the resident engineer, M.O.W. Trentham, requested (26 April, 1973) a geological appraisal of the slope before commencing the widening work. (auth)
