Abstract: The Rai Valley sheet area includes much of the Pelorus catchment and the eastern shore of Tasman Bay from Delaware Bay to Croisilles Harbour. The area is bisected by the main highway connecting Nelson with the east coast of the South Island. Except for upper Quaternary alluvium filling narrow valley floors, the rocks are entirely of Permian to lower Mesozoic age regionally metamorphised to as high as greenschist facies. The rocks are divided into four northnoreast to northeast trending terranes: Brook Street, Murihiku, Dun Mountain-Maitai and Caples. The Brook Street Terrane, consisting dominantly of augite-rich basaltic sedimentary rocks of middle Permian age, is not exposed as it lies beneath Tasman Bay. Pre-European Maori quarried altered sedimentary blocks from the Patuki and Croisilles melanges for stone implement manufacture. Gold and scheelite were extensively mined in the southeast of the Caples Terrane, and small amounts of chromite have periodically been mined from the Patuki Melange. Copper was prospected in the latter unit. (auth)
