Abstract
Sheet QM342 covers a large part of the Wairarapa region, in the southern North Island. This area contains a considerable variety of metallic and non-metallic mineral resources, but only three - alluvial greywacke gravels, limestone, and groundwater, are of economic significance at present. Other important resources include sand, clay (for brick making), and bentonite. Hydrocarbon potential of the region is considered to be relatively low. Current mineral extraction is essentially confined to quarrying of gravel deposits for building aggregate and roading materials (about 500 000 tonnes in 1989), and quarrying of limestone for agricultural lime (26 000 tonnes in 1989). Reserves of greywacke gravel and limestone are very large, but increased production of aggregate and agricultural lime is limited by economic factors. Considerable potential exists for greater use of limestone for roading and industrial purposes. Aquifer systems underlying the Wairarapa and Manawatu Plains are an important source of groundwater for city (Palmerston North), town, industrial, agricultural, and domestic use. Individual wells tapping these aquifers yield up to 6500 m3 /day.(auths)
