Abstract: In Part 1 the need for generically subdividing the broad Lamarckian genus Turritella is emphasized and the criteria for doing this are discussed. These are: the shape of the outer lip of the aperture; the manner of development of the spiral sculpture, especially on the neanic whorls; and the kind of protoconch. The restricted dispersal ability of the family in general, and the influence of this on taxonomy are pointed out, and the seven New Zealand Danian to Recent genera and subgenera that have been named are described and figured. Part 2 describes the known occurrences and supposed relationships of twenty-nine species and subspecies of Stiracolpus , a Pliocene to Recent subgenus of Zeacolpus , followed by a systematic description of the different forms, each of which is figured. The descriptions are based mainly on the way in which the spiral sculpture develops. (auth)
