Kear, D. 1965 South Auckland road-metal quarries : ''wacke'' type rocks. Lower Hutt: New Zealand Geological Survey. Report NZGS 2 25 p.
Abstract: This is an updated version of a preliminary report (1961) which resulted from a request from District Commissioner of Works, Hamilton, for a geological investigation into the quality of road metal from South Auckland quarries. (A petrographical report was also written by W.A. Watters, Geological Survey, Lower Hutt in 1961) Five fieldtrips were made in 1961, covering the area from Port Waikato and Piopio in the west to Whakatane in the east. Metal from some quarries was found to be unsuitable for road surfacing, in some cases possibly because of zeolite content. Argillites are perhaps inevitably poorer than greywackes as they are more prone to weakening on weathering. More adequate prospecting of quarries is required to ensure a consistent quality of material. (auth/.ARC)
