Morgans, H.E.G. 2001 Sample collections (1982-2000) from Tawanui Section, Akitio River, Southern Hawkes Bay . Lower Hutt: Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences. Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences science report 2001/05 20 p.
Abstract: This report documents sample collections made from 1982 through to early 2000 from the Tawanui Section, a very well exposed Late Cretaceous - Early Miocene sequence in Southern Hawkes Bay. Several comprehensive sample suites have been collected since 1982, mainly for biostratigraphic and paleoenvironmental purposes. Ongoing integrated stratigraphic studies including magnetostratigraphy, stable isotopes, biomarkers, inorganic geochemistry and biostratigraphy (benthic & planktonic frominifera, calcareous nannofossils, dinoflagellates, pollen and spores) highlight the potential of this section. Detailed studies of the Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) boundary and Teurian/Waipawan (Dt/Dw) boundary have been published and new studies are underway. The deterioration of the Te Uri Stream section (Stratotype for the Dannevirke Series: Teurian, Waipawan, Mangaorapan, Heretaungan, and Porangan Stages), now mostly unexposed, has lead to the establishment of Tawanui and Aropito sections as hypostratotypes to supplement the original type section.
