Abstract
Although New Zealand provides an ideal site to explore offshore gas hydrate extraction as a potential future energy resource, its commercial viability can only be explored if production can proceed safely. Consequently, determining whether offshore gas hydrate extraction could generate geohazards, such as submarine landslides, is essential but rarely studied. This report characterises the geotechnical properties of typical sediment types retrieved from the HYDEE Programme (Gas Hydrates: Economic Opportunities and Environmental Implications) study area during the 2016 Sonne and 2017/18 International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) expeditions. The sediments tested in this study are compared with previous geotechnical data from the area to provide representative geotechnical parameters to inform conceptual modelling and stability assessments.
