Abstract

Over 10 years have passed since the last systematic review of Aotearoa New Zealand’s volcano monitoring instrumentation requirements. Here, we conduct a new review, following and expanding on the approach taken by Miller (2011) and Miller and Jolly (2014) in the first New Zealand Volcano Early Warning System (NZVEWS) report.In this report, we present recommendations on volcano monitoring instrumentation and a set of prioritisation principles to support their implementation for the next decade to 2033.Our recommendations are derived from a mixture of the United States Geological Survey National VEWS recommendations of Moran et al. (2008) and the data needs of the Aotearoa New Zealand volcano monitoring community, gathered from written submissions, a series of workshops and continued dialogue with the expert data users.We group recommendations into four instrumentation levels and associate these levels with the volcano threat groups in Miller et al. (2022). We then compare the recommended and existing data acquisition networks to identify gaps. We invited the volcano monitoring community to design instrumentation networks that would address these gaps and align with the network design principles developed through data needs consultation. From these network designs, we produce minimum and maximum network recommendations for each volcano.In total, 307 additional instrumentation stations are recommended in network designs and between 318 and 550 additional sensors are recommended overall (not including web cameras). To help guide the implementation of the recommendations over the next 10 years, we provide a set of prioritisation principles that have been agreed on by the GeoNet Volcano Monitoring Group at GNS Science.
