Abstract

The aim of this report is to review tsunami evacuation zone mapping approaches and develop considerations based on social science research methods for the effective number and communication of tsunami evacuation zones on public-facing maps. Tsunami evacuation maps are a key tool used to manage and communicate tsunami hazard in Aotearoa New Zealand’s coastal communities. We have built an evidence base from the literature, as well as from primary data collection through case studies, interviews and focus groups in Aotearoa New Zealand, to understand the public’s understanding of tsunami evacuation zones and map design preferences. Based on this evidence base, we present a set of considerations based on various aspects of tsunami evacuation mapping in Aotearoa New Zealand
