Hancox, G.T. 1972 Tongariro power development. Faulting and seismicity in the Moawhango area. Lower Hutt: New Zealand Geological Survey. New Zealand Geological Survey report EG 126 11 p.

Abstract: In recent years it has become apparent that man-made reservoirs are sometimes directly responsible for earthquakes with epicenters below or near the lake impounded by large dams. There are now numerous cases of reservoir induced seismicity throughout the world and a number have been well documented. Lake Kariba, Lake Meade and Koyna and Mangla dams are well known examples where this phenomenon has occurred. In this report comments are made on the possibility of reservoir induced seismicity of the Moawhango dam site and faulting in the area is examined in detail. Seismic and the possible effects of reservoir impounding are also discussed. (auth)
