Abstract: Standardized methods of logging cable tool percussion drill holes, shafts and open excavations are given. Where soils are being logged the method of description should follow the format given in McLean (1976). Where rocks are being described the method of description should follow the format given in Riddolls (1976). Examples of standardized logging forms together with explanation of the various sections of the form are given. Examples of photographic coverage which generally accompany the logs are also included. The format given together with the method of soil description were developed initially for use on the Upper Waitaki Power Development Scheme but are now intended for general use by the Engineering Geology Section, New Zealand Geological Survey.
