Abstract: A revised stratigraphic nomenclature for eastern North Island Cretaceous and early Tertiary sedimentary rocks is presented. This includes a discussion on the problems associated with existing nomenclature, proposals for changes in nomenclature, and comments on the present status of various units. One new group (Matawai Group), 4 new formations (Waitahaia, Owhena, Tahora and Tangaruhe), and 3 members are described.
