Abstract: This report gives a comprehensive list of formally proposed names for groups, formations and members within the Cretaceous and Tertiary sedimentary rocks of the Western Southland region. Type localities or sections, distribution, thickness, name derivation, content, inferred depositional environment, age range, synonyms and equivalent units are systematically listed. The status of redundant, outdated or duplicated names is reviewed, and some existing informal names are formalised. There are several problems inherent in applying formal lithostratigraphic nomenclature to this area, which has been tectonically active since the Early Cretaceous.
