Finlay, H.J.; Marwick, J. 1937 The Wangaloan and associated molluscan faunas of Kaitangata-Green Island subdivision. Wellington: New Zealand Geological Survey. New Zealand Geological Survey paleontological bulletin 15 140 p.

Abstract: The ages and correlations of the coal-bearing formations of the country have always been among the major problems of New Zealand geology. Therefore the richly fossiliferous marine beds, overlying the coal-measures in the Kaitangata district, and exposed on the beach near Wangaloa, have attracted considerable attention, and different opinions have been expressed as to their age. Although the Wangaloa fossils were known right from the early days of colonization, the fauna, owing to the backward state of palaeontology in New Zealand, was not systematically described until 1917, when Dr P. Marshall published his paper ''The Whangaloa Beds'', showing what an extremely interesting and puzzling group of mollusca was present. It now appears that some of the contradictions were due to the fact that the ''Wangaloan'' fauna, as described by Marshall and listed by Hector and Suter, was based on specimens from more than one horizon. Therefore the material is here described under the following heads: (1) Wangaloan fauna, from Wangaloa coast and Boulder Hill; (2) Matau fauna, from Castle Hill Shaft; (3) Specimens of uncertain locality.
