Hicks, S.R. 1976 Shallow seismic surveys at Ohau bay and Te Ika a Maru Bay. [s.l.]: [s.n.]. Report / Geophysics Division 108 13 p.

Abstract: Seismic refraction surveys were conducted at Ohau Bay and Te Ika a Maru Bay on Wellington's west coast. Below a thin soil layer, there is in each bay a layer of low P-wave velocity (typically 1.8 km/s) which probably represents gravels. At Te Ika a Maru Bay there is another layer of velocity about 2.5 km/s overlying the basement. This layer may be present at Ohau Bay, but if so is too thin to be mapped by this survey. This velocity also is typical of gravels, while the basement velocity of 3.5 - 4.0 km/s is typical of greywacke or argillite. In each bay, the depth to bedrock increases rapidly to seaward, close to the shore. This suggests there may be a buried cliff a few metres inshore in each bay.
