Bannister, S.C. 1993 Seismic investigation of the Victoria Land Basin under Ross Island : New Zealand Antarctic Programme 1992/93, Event 101. Lower Hutt: Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences science report 93/14 16 p.
Abstract: A seismic reflection and wide-angle reflection experiment was carried out along an 11 km line perpendicular to the Hut Point Peninsula, to image the base of the volcanic layer and the Cenozoic sediments presumed to lie beneath the volcanics. Preliminary results from the experiment show steeply westward-dipping sedimentary sequences more than 1 km thick, 5 km east of the peninsula. Further processing is being carried out to enhance the sequences beneath Hut Point Peninsula. We have begun to interpret the base of the volcanic layer using reflection characteristics and to relate the findings to seismic data previously collected in the Ross Sea and southeast of Ross Island. The results from this experiment will assist planning for possible stratigraphic drilling of the Cenozoic sediments. (auth)
