Woodward, D.J.; Davey, F.J.; Ravens, J.M. 1994 Seismic tests for the South Island Transect - 1993 . Lower Hutt: Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences science report 94/31 17 p.

Abstract: Seismic tests in Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand show that it is practical to undertake a seismic survey across the South Island to investigate the structure of the lower crust and upper mantle. The main difficulties will be the drilling of shot holes within the Canterbury and West Coast alluvial gravels for the required 25-35 kg charges and the need to record with offsets ranging from 3500 m to 10 km. It has been determined that the receiver spacing should be no greater that 50 m in order to identify the continuity of deep crustal reflectors. It is essential that the shots be at least 25 kg in drill holes about 20 m deep and the shot spacing be no greater than about 1.0 km. (auths)
